International Academic Mobility OUTGOING

ERI/UFPR Call for Applications

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When and where are the International Mobility Calls published?

ERI/UFPR Calls are published twice a year, at the beginning of each semester: the first is usually in March, the second in August.

They are published on the ERI website:

https://internacional.ufpr.br/portal/

Applications can be submitted at:

https://internacional.ufpr.br/inscricao/

2. Who can apply?

Students enrolled in one of UFPR’s on-site undergraduate courses but provided they meet the criteria described in the call.

The student must have:

  • Academic Performance Index (IRA) ≥ 0.6000;
  • No more than 90% of course credits completed by the time of departure;
  • Minimum course completion of 1.5 to 2 years (as per Annex II of the Call – Minimum Periodization per department);
  • Maximum of 4 failed courses (mandatory, elective, or optional). From 5 to 8 failures, an evaluation by the course coordinator is required;
  • Depending on the candidate’s country, knowledge of the local language is mandatory, with varying proficiency levels depending on each university. Normally, level B1 (Intermediate 1 – CEFR) or above is required.

3. Who cannot apply?

  • Students admitted through Double Degree programs;
  • Those already on exchange (registered in the SIGA system for academic mobility);
  • Exchange students currently at UFPR, or those with GRT/GRI registration;
  • Students with suspended enrolment at the time of application.

4. What documents must be submitted?

  • A CV to be evaluated by the selection committee (ask your Department’s International Relations Committee about the format if unsure);
  • Supporting documents for the CV;
  • For Tech students: an additional form specific to the department;
  • Proof of language proficiency accepted by the chosen university, according to the call’s requirements.

5. How does the language requirement work?

Students must ensure that the university offers the desired courses in the language for which they have proven proficiency. Otherwise, they may lose the spot.

  • For Intermediate 1 and 2 (B1/B2 CEFR), proficiency certificates must be no older than 2 years, regardless of the test.
  • For Advanced level (C1 CEFR), some universities may accept certificates up to 4 years old.

⚠️ Language course completion certificates are not accepted. Only official proficiency certificates.

Note: CELIN offers, on specific dates, proficiency tests in English accepted by some universities.

6. Is financial aid available?

Depending on budget availability, UFPR may offer financial support to the top-ranked students in each department. Information about the granting of the scholarship will only be available at the beginning of the semester scheduled for mobility.

7. What are the stages of the selection process?

The process has 3 stages:

  1. Applications – elimination if incomplete.
  1. Interviews – eliminatory and classificatory, including oral questioning and CV evaluation.
  1. Allocation – eliminatory and consists of the allocation of students to the available slots, carried out automatically by the system.

8. Can I choose the university?

Yes. Each student may apply to up to a maximum of 3 universities, listed in order of preference. The first listed is the priority, and the order cannot be changed after submission, the system respects this order when allocating.

The number of available spots will be indicated within the system at the time of application.

9. How are spots allocated?

Automatically by the system, considering the student’s final score and order of university preference.

  • Round 1: considers only first-choice universities.
  • Round 2: considers only second-choice universities.
  • Round 3: considers only third-choice universities.
    If a choice is denied, the student does not participate in that allocation round.
    Students without allocation after 3 rounds are automatically eliminated from the process.

10. Where are results published?

Final results of the selection process are published on the International Office (ERI) portal: (www.internacional.ufpr.br) on the date mentioned in each call for applications.

11. What do I do after being selected?

Students confirm their participation will be contacted via their UFPR email with instructions about documents required by the institution. This usually happens 2–3 months after results are published.

12. Should I contact the host university directly?

No. Nominations are handled institutionally by the [International Relations Office] ERI. Applications sent Independently will be automatically rejected. Only ERI can submit applications to partner universities.

13. When and how will I know if I can participate in the international mobility program?

Once the application has been submitted, the university reviews the application and issues an Acceptance Letter if approved which will be sent to the ERI and then forwarded to the student.

Each university has its own deadlines and procedures; ERI has no influence over them.

14. Can the host university reject me?

Yes. Host institutions have full autonomy to accept, reject, or reduce the exchange period.

Acceptance depends solely on them, and the Acceptance Letter is essential for continuing the process because it specifies the period of study for which the student has been admitted.

15. What costs must I cover?

Generally, tuition fees are waived under cooperation agreement signed between UFPR and the foreign institutions. However, some universities may charge administrative or registration fees. Students are responsible for:

  • Travel, visa, accommodation, food, health insurance, school supplies, books, and other living expenses.

16. How do I obtain a visa?

With the original letter of Acceptance, the student must begin consular visa procedures and other bureaucratic steps for entering the country.

Visa application and compliance with country requirements are the student’s sole responsibility.

ERI does not mediate visa processes.

17. When I go on mobility, do I need to suspend my UFPR enrollment or enroll in other subjects?

No. Students remain enrolled under the “Academic Mobility” status in the SIGA system. This status will have semester validity, depending on the mobility period. This procedure is conditional on the student submitting proof of enrollment/declaration of arrival and the start of classes at the institution for the corresponding period of activities outside UFPR.

18. How long can I stay abroad? Can I extend?

The student may remain on mobility through the ERI for 6 months or for a maximum period of 1 year, with no possibility of extension beyond this deadline.

For mobilities lasting less than 6 months, the student may extend up to 1 year depending on the university’s availability of additional spots and approval of the extension.

The process must be formalized through ERI but cannot exceed 1-year or extend into later semesters.

When the extension request overlaps with the allocation of new spots for the following semester, it may be denied by the ERI if it interferes with institutional interests.

19. Can the course i take abroad be transferred at UFPR?

Validation depends on each course coordination, which decides on equivalence of courses taken abroad.

20. What are my responsibilities while abroad?

  • Complete a study plan with at least 24 ECTS per semester (1 ECTS ≈ 25–30 hours).
  • Achieve at least 75% success in courses. If the student does not achieve this minimum performance, their academic mobility will be classified as ‘objective not achieved in the SIGA system.
  • Represent UFPR properly, both academically and socially.
  • Respect the country’s laws and the university’s rules.

21. What should I do after returning?

Students must:

  • Collect all academic documents (transcripts, syllabus, credit hours, grades, evaluation system) from the host institution.
  • It is entirely the student’s responsibility when the mobility period ends to Re-enroll in UFPR courses through SIGA within the deadlines established by UFPR. Otherwise, the student may lose their enrollment status at the university.

You can check the current agreements through SIGA – Integrated Agreement Management System, via the link International Relations Office

2. Do all agreements offer mobility opportunities?

No. Most times, foreign universities require specific agreements or do not offer student mobility opportunities. This consultation is carried out by the ERI before each public notice, which updates the selection process system with available spots and other requirements, such as GPA, language level, etc.

3. How can I propose a new international cooperation agreement?

Requests to formalize International Cooperation Agreements must be submitted by a UFPR FACULTY MEMBER, via SEI process to the UFPR/R/GAB/ERI inbox, containing:

  • An official letter explicitly stating the justification for the agreement and the expected benefits for UFPR.
  • Emails exchanged with the international counterpart about the agreement.
  • Extracts of meeting minutes approving the cooperation in 2 instances. The FIRST by the department, undergraduate, or graduate program, and the SECOND must be from the SECTOR. Only ONE of the approvals may be ad referendum.
  • Documents proving the constitution and operation of the foreign entity (e.g., bylaws, decree of creation, printscreen from the institution’s website, etc.).
  • Proof of the legal representative’s authority to sign legal instruments and assume obligations (appointment order, power of attorney, printscreen from the institution’s website, etc.)
  • Draft of the cooperation agreement in an editable format. At this stage it should not be signed, as the document may still undergo changes.

Agreement templates are available on the International Relations Office website.

4. How do I make a cotutelle agreement [joint supervision]?

Graduate students (master’s and doctorate) can develop their thesis/dissertation under a cotutelle arrangement.

The student will have a supervisor at UFPR and another at the foreign university, carrying out an international academic activity and after fulfilling all requirements, will receive a diploma by each institution.

Procedures for requesting cotutelle agreement formalization are available on: International Relations Office. In general, agreements are signed individually for each candidate.

5. How does double-degree work?

Just like cotutelle, the student has one supervisor at UFPR and another at the foreign university, carries out an international stay, and after fulfilling all requirements receives a diploma from each institution.

However, the double-degree program creates a deeper and more structured partnerships between institutions depending on a detailed agreement.

Currently, UFPR has agreements that allow double degrees for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students.

The courses can be consulted on International Relations Office.

Language/Culture Courses for Internationalization

1. How can I prepare for mobility?

Good relations between countries and people from different cultures depend mainly on understanding others and respecting differences.

Before undertaking mobility abroad or before an international student comes to Brazil, UFPR recommends studying the language and culture of the country..

Knowing the language and cultural aspects minimizes failures or disappointments and greatly helps adaptation to new life, even for a short period.

Therefore, it is important to learn about the country and study its language and culture.

2. Does UFPR offer language courses for mobility?

Yes, through the Andifes Languages without Borders Network (IsF), UFPR offers FREE language courses throughout the year.

Courses are available in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Japanese.

To enroll, students must register through a specific public notice.

Each offer is published on the ERI website, and information is also sent via the Internationalization Newsletter (sent to your institutional email).

These courses are usually online but may also be in-person, normally held at the UFPR Campus Reitoria .

To check the offers, visit the ERI website: https://internacional.ufpr.br/portal/editais-isf/

3. What is the focus of the IsF language courses?

Most IsF courses aim to prepare for academic mobility,this means that you should already know a little of the language and want to deepen your knowledge.

Therefore, IsF offers courses as academic writing, academic reading, oral presentations, seminar presentations, among others.

4. Who can take IsF courses?

All undergraduate and graduate students, technical staff, faculty, outsourced staff, and/or Funpar staff.

5. I want to be an IsF language teacher, is it possible?

UFPR Language students are the teachers of the IsF courses. They are supervised  by professors of the UFPR Language faculty.

To become an IsF teacher, you need to apply in specific teacher selection calls.

These are available on the ERI website: https://internacional.ufpr.br/portal/editais-isf/ .

IsF teachers receive scholarships for their work.

6. I applied for IsF language courses and don’t know if my application was approved. What should I do?

Each IsF language area has at least one UFPR professor responsible.

The contact list of these professors is available on the ERI website: https://internacional.ufpr.br/portal/isf-idiomas-sem-fronteiras/

7. Do IsF courses issue certificates?

Yes, you will receive an extension course certificate upon successful completion of your IsF language course.

This certificate may also be accepted in some undergraduate programs as complementary academic activities. Check with your course coordination.

8. I entered undergraduate studies and want to learn languages for mobility. How should I proceed?

If you have never studied the language and need to start from the basic levels, plan your pathway through the language courses you will need to take, so that from the middle of your undergraduate studies onward, you achieve proficiency in the target language for mobility.

Soon, suggested language course pathways will be available on the ERI website.

9. What is the difference between Celin and IsF?

Celin (UFPR’s Language and Intercultural Center) usually offers regular language courses, that is, traditional level-based courses such as Basic 1, Basic 2, Basic 3, Intermediate 1, etc.

IsF may offer some similar courses, but generally focuses on courses designed for academic international mobility preparation, such as Academic Writing in English, Seminar Presentation in Spanish, Specialized Reading of Academic Articles in Italian, Improving Spoken English, etc.

10. Which language proficiency tests are accepted for mobility?

It depends on the university you want to apply.

Each institution has its own rules. Normally, official proficiency tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge (English), DELF, DALF (French), DELE, CELU (Spanish), among others, are accepted by universities if you reach the required proficiency level (usually Intermediate 1 or higher).

At UFPR, Celin offers English proficiency tests through specific public notices.
